   The Allto AS-MPPT-20A is a sturdy unit that is easy to mount and see what it is going on. I wanted a controller that would give me good feedback without me having to interpret flashing lights (see attached photos). My old unit required me to have the instructions with me to differentiate between solid red, long flashing red and quick flashing red – in addition to what it means when the color changes. I love that the Allto unit does not require translation. I also wanted a unit that would monitor my battery temperature and adjust accordingly. I use my panel to charge a marine battery for my trolling motor and it gets hot in the summer. This unit is perfect for my needs.

   A nice compact MPPT charging unit. I’ve only used for a few weeks, but it seems to handle all the basic needs for my 24V charging setup, and at a lower price than you typically find for this quality. Time will tell, but so far so good!

   Controllers are necessary to charge batteries with a solar panel.
   A MPPT is connected between the solar panel and battery to protect from overcharging.
   This ALLTO SOLAR is a very solid well built unit with a durable case.
   Offers 6 Solar to Battery charging modes with LED indicators
   12V, 12V AGM, 12V Lithium; 24V, 24V AGM, and 24V Lithium
   Because I am charging 12v lead acid car batteries I use the temp sensor that comes with the unit.
   The easy to read LCD screen highlights charging modes and error codes.
   I am charging one 12v battery at a time but the manual shows how to hook-up multiple batteries.

   I was looking for a good, not too expensive, entry MPPT controller; that brought me to this Allto unit (and I also have panels from Allto which performed very well so I am sticking with the brand). With an MPPT controller, you have the option to run your panels in series or parallel, and running my panels in series doubles available voltage (up to around 40 volts, which the solar charge controller converts excess voltage to the appropriate voltage (12 or 24 volts) and current (amps) to charge your batteries. I haven’t yet set it up in series yet, but on testing with a single panel it hooked up very securely, and the display was easy and intuitive to read. I really liked that it has a temperature sensor which is basically a wire with a metal temperature gauge which you place on the battery; that way the controller uses as a factor in the float charge (which helps with the charging efficiency and longevity of the battery by not overcharging it.) This will be upgrading my offgrid outbuilding array. In all, a great MPPT controller from Allto, and a worthwhile addition to a solar build.

   I have a 100w panel on my van, and when I first installed it, I used a generic unbranded 15A MPPT controller. It worked OK but I felt like the power being stored wasn’t that impressive. I was getting around ~20Ah a day into my battery. I wanted a MPPT controller that I could grow into, so I chose this 20A Allto one due to the efficiency claims.

   I’m now getting ~23Ah a day, so around 15% better than my cheapo controller. Nice.

   I will wait for the remote meter to go on sale and will try that next.

   I field tested the controller on my travel trailer with a 100 watt solar panel mounted on the roof and the house AGM battery. It worked flawlessly. It was easy to set up. The lead terminals are nicely designed and very secure. The display is easy to read and the function menu is intuitive, not confusing. A real bonus is the temperature sensor, not a feature you usually see on charge controllers of comparable price. By factoring in the battery temperature, the controller’s algorithm can more efficiently control the charging. All and all this is a very nice charge controller at a reasonable price. I recommend it without reservation.
